Michel Barnier

European Commissioner for Internal Market and Services

Michel Barnier, born January 9, 1951 (La Tronche – Isère) is a French politician. After having been Secretary of State and Minister, he is now European Commissioner for Internal Market and Services.
After fighting in the Gaullist party, Michel Barnier joined the RPR and the UMP. He supported Edouard Balladur during the 1995 presidential campaign.
He is very early interested in environmental issues, he is the author of a report with concrete proposals (“One for all and a hundred proposals for the environment,” 1990).
His other focus is Europe (Secretary of State, Minister and European Commissioner). He participated in the negotiations of the Treaty of Amsterdam, it is top of the list in the European elections of 2009.
Since his appointment as European Commissioner, he aims to a better control of the financial markets, to reform the rating agencies or to harmonize European accounting standards.
